PAINTING A DISTRESSED SHABBY GREIGE FINISH ON LORI'S JACK & JILL BATHROOM CABINETS

PAINTING A DISTRESSED SHABBY GREIGE FINISH ON LORI'S JACK & JILL BATHROOM CABINETS

Lori remodeled her upstairs baths.
This one is a Jack and Jill bath.  She got beautiful new flooring, granite and tile.
Then she asked me to paint a special color finish that would tie in and bring all of the colors together.
It's hard to see her granite, but it's a creamy gray beigy color...greige?  I thought that granite was so beautiful and loved the tile backsplash.
Those border tiles are the ones I posted earlier.  Lori's second batch of border tiles came in with an unfinished edge and she asked me to paint the edges to match the first batch of tiles.
This is a link to that post:
I love the way they turned out.  I was a bit anxious that when the tile guy was grouting, it might wipe off my new paint, but they turned out just fine...thank goodness!!
I love the dark border and that is why I painted that tiny trim on the raised panels of the cabinets to tie in with the darker border tiles.
This is a close-up of the cabinet finish that I painted.
Lori wanted a bit of distressing, so I lightly sanded the edges.
She loved the way it all turned out and I did, too.
Meet Panda Lu and Buffy.
They are sweet sisters.  Buffy is 13 and Panda Lu is less than a year old.
She sure keeps Buffy in shape.  They play and run together up the stairs/down the stairs, then they nap together.
Really, really sweet dogs.
This is the bathroom before I painted the cabinets.  They were stained that orangey oak stain.
That is still a very nice finish, but lots of my clients are wanting to "update" their homes and ask me to paint over the older finishes.
Thank you for letting me work for you again, Lori!!

  1. I know exactly what you mean. The old oak cabinets are looking a little dated these days. I would love to update our cabinets, but hubby likes them the way they are. Greige seems to be the hot color now. Nice job as usual, Lynda.

  2. Thirty years of oak cabinets...it is a wonder there are any oak trees left...your update looks great. What took so long to get past the oak cabinet? I love the new colors that are going into homes.

    1. Thank you! I think wood cabinet finishes will be back. Some people are tired of them, for now. Men seem to LOVE the wood look.

  6. Love the greige cabinets - much better than the oak. We have some oak bedroom furniture that I would love to paint, but hubby says no. So, I'm waiting for it to come back into style!

  10. I am getting ready to paint my bathroom cabinets and they are currently the same oak. I love the finish. Can you share exactly what you used to get the finished result?

    1. Hi Nicki, I usually mix a lot of my paints and stains and try to match each client's colors. For the technique, I painted on a lighter color and painted on/rubbed off a darker color. then sanded the edges and sealed all of the cabinets. If you will go to your paint store, I'm sure they will have samples of different finishes and colors. Choose the one that you like and ask the paint people any questions you might have. It's important to get the colors that will match best in your bathroom. The supplies that you will find at your stores are probably not the same ingredients and brands that my paint store sells. So, that's why I'm suggesting you ask at your paint store. Hope that helps. Lynda

    2. Thanks Lynda! So just to be sure I understand. you did not use glaze or anything? you just used a darker paint color on top and rubbed it off?

    3. Nicki, Correct...on this one I used the color/tone of paint that I wanted for this bath. If I need to, I will put a little bit of water in the paint to thin it for the painting on and rubbing off process. If you want to use glaze, I think that would work the same and might be easier for you to use. Just add your paint color to clear glaze and you won't have to water it down. I've been doing these processes for so long, that I just do what I need to do for each job and the way I do things might not work as well for you and others. Just practice on the inside of a door or a piece of wood until you get exactly what you want.
