PAINTING FAUX FINISHES ON IRENE'S DINING ROOM WALLS & CEILING & CRACKLED DISTRESSED FINISH ON HER KITCHEN CABINETS

Irene's home is so elegant!

Through the years she has asked me to paint special finishes in several of her rooms.

This is her dining room.

I painted her ceiling medallion to coordinate with her fabrics and the finish I painted on her ceiling.

I painted her ceiling a very dark brown and hand painted metallic gold over the whole surface.  I painted the gold in swirls, just swirling my paint brush.

Remember, you have to have light for the metallic paints to reflect.

This is the finish I painted on her dining room walls. I painted the walls a metallic gold, then crackled a very soft green over the gold.  Last, I glazed with an antiquing glaze.  Notice that I painted the chair rail  and switch plate so they wouldn't be so noticeable.

I painted the crown molding the same dark brown as the ceiling.  Then, I painted a solid coat of the metallic gold, leaving little brown streaks.

If I paint a special finish on a ceiling I always paint over the a/c vent, too.  Sometimes I paint the whole thing and sometimes I just paint the outer edges and not the little louvres.  

This is the crackled distressed finish I painted on her kitchen cabinets.

I used a stencil and metallic gold for the design.  

Then, I painted an aging glaze and sealed with a clear sealer.

This is one of my favorite kitchens that I've painted.  

I think the cabinets are so beautiful and really fit in with her other decor.   

Her kitchen island has the same finish as the other cabinets.

There is a wet bar between the large kitchen area and the dining room.  

I painted the same finish on those cabinets.  The upper cabinet doors have a decorative clear glass and you can see her beautiful crystal glasses.

HAND PAINTING A CHANDELIER & HIDING METALLIC GOLD WITH A BLACK GLAZE ON A CABINET

 My friend just moved into a beautiful new home.  While arranging her furniture this cabinet fit perfectly in this spot.  There was some metallic gold on it and she wanted to change the metallic gold to black.  See those vertical decorative insets and feet?  There are four.  Two in front and one on either side in the very back.  I used a black glaze, painted over all four and sealed them with a clear sealer.  You can see some of the gold coming through the black, but it looks like a faux finish.  There were some tiny chips here and there on the cabinet and I used craft paint to touch up and cover the chips.  I think I used Americana Soft Black.  It was beautiful with the metallic gold, but now it looks really, really nice with the black.  Oh, and they will be changing out the handles.  If I get a picture of the new handles I will post and show you. My friend's very large chandelier in the dining room was really bright and shiny with metallic silver paint.  She preferred that it be toned down, so I used the same black glaze to soften the shiny silver.  I've painted many a light fixture and chandelier.  You have to paint every single arm on all four sides, every leaf and every single decorative piece.  It took hours to do that, standing on a ladder.  I painted on and wiped off with a rag.  Toned down the acanthus leaves with a yellow gold craft paint.  Painted on and wiped off.  When the lights are on you can see some metallic silver shining through and it looks really pretty.

I loved getting to see her beautiful new home.

PAINTING ANTIQUE GATES FOR ROBIN & JAVI'S BEAUTIFUL HOME

Robin and Javi were building a new home.  While it was being built Robin was busy looking for old doors and other antique items.  She found these old gates.  They looked really good, but had been painted with what I think was interior paint.  Most interior paints will not hold up for very long outside in the sun and weather.  So, after two years that paint was looking really flaky.  (Above is the new paint.)

This is the new coat of paint.  In time, these gates will fade a little bit and look even better.

Their new home is really beautiful.  Robin does all of her decorating and I'm sure she helped design her new home.

When I paint I get really messy hands.  Often, I wipe paint off with my hands instead of a rag.

This picture is "before".

Those bars are metal.  I lightly swiped paint on them.  The rust will come back through the paint. 

Also, I only swiped a little bit of paint on all of the metal latches.

 Robin wanted them to look old and rust does look old.

I love these old gates.

First, I scraped off as much of the flaky paint as I could.  I left the rest of the old paint on for the texture and I knew it would show through the new paint as I wiped it off. 

 I used exterior flat paint.  I painted a little on and immediately rubbed it off with a rag.  And, kept doing that until all was painted.

HAND PAINTED PADDINGTON BEAR THEMED BABY SHOWER FOR HAYLEY'S FRIEND, LILLYAN

 Hayley was planning a baby shower for her friend, Lillyan.  Lillyan LOVES the Paddington movie, especially the Paddington houses.  So, Hayley decided Paddington should be the theme for the baby shower.  Hayley asked me to draw and paint a 6'x6' mural of the Paddington houses.  She wanted to use it as a back drop for picture taking at the shower.  What a great idea!

This is Lillyan, mommy-to-be.

Looks like everybody had fun.

Getting started.  A carpenter friend built a 6'x6' frame out of 2x4's and stapled the huge canvas tightly onto the frame.  It was tight enough that the canvas was stable while I was painting.

Hayley had a back drop stand for holding up the mural.  Everything looked perfect!

The holidays are right around the corner and I bet you're planning your decorations.

A fun way to decorate is with canvas drop cloths.

These are the halloween drop cloths that I painted for a client.

You can paint these, too.

They were fun to paint!

I used craft paints.

  For all of the large metallic swipes that you see, I used a very wide brush.

Your kids would have so much fun painting

witches, black cats, spiders, ghosts, etc.  All are very easy to paint.

Just spread out the drop cloths on your driveway and let'em go at it!!

Your trees are begging you not to throw their leaves away.

Their roots are deep and bring up the minerals and good things in the earth for nourishment.

Those minerals go straight to the leaves.  In the fall as they flutter to the ground, they are putting those minerals and good things back into the soil to nourish the roots.

Those leaves are organic matter and as they decay, all is returned to the soil.

Healthy soil is what makes a healthy garden.
(Be organic~no chemicals, please)

Most of the leaves in my yard are soft and will decay pretty quickly.  I don't mind the look of the fallen leaves.  If they bother you, you can mow over them to break them up.  Then you can rake over them and they will settle to the ground and be a good mulch, then compost for the grass and your landscape.

If you think you have too many leaves for your grass, rake them into the flower beds and extra piles around your trees.  Or, you can share them with your neighbors.

FALLING LEAVES IS HOW THE EARTH REPLENISHES ITSELF.

PLEASE DON'T THROW THE LEAVES AWAY.
