A MAKEOVER FOR ELSA'S KITCHEN ISLAND~DESIGNING & PAINTING A SPECIAL FINISH

A MAKEOVER FOR ELSA'S KITCHEN ISLAND~DESIGNING & PAINTING A SPECIAL FINISH

My client asked me to help her with her kitchen island.
It was plain and she wanted it to be fancy and look like a piece of furniture.
She asked me to pick out the trim and paint colors to go with her granite
and the rest of her very large kitchen.
It was fun deciding how to dress up her island.  She showed me a picture of an island that I had painted and told me she really likes rope trim.  So, I showed her a sample of a cabinet door that I had painted and brought over the wood trim that I had picked out.
She approved!
So, I asked a carpenter to attach the trim pieces and he did a great job.
This is how her island looked BEFORE.
Notice the white switch plate and cover.
Me getting the special paint finish started.
This is sweet little Ellie.  She's smiling.
She was so cute and playful and she  minded her mommy when she told her to get away from the paint.
I picked out the knobs and my client approved.
They look really, really good on the doors and drawers.
She loves her new island!!
It happened to be my birthday and she surprised me with a birthday cake.
I LOVE chocolate!!
Thank you so much, Elsa!!

  12. Gorgeous trim detail Lynda - it changed the entire look of that island along with your beautiful vintage paint technique. Both took this island up several notches. Your work never ceases to amaze me!

    1. Thank you! They were colors that I mixed to try to match the colors in her kitchen. I guess, off white and a stain that I mixed, too.

    1. Hi, I used a light beigy paint for the base coat and a darker gel stain over that. I just finished my first e-book about using gel stains to look like brush strokes. My next e-book will be step by step using gel stains in a different way to look like this island. Anyway, hope that helps. And, always make samples to see how it will turn out.

  18. Thank you so much. We were trying to guess that it was a grey green...interesting that it was a beigy...

    1. Lisa, the base coat probably was a gray beigy color. Then, the stain being oil based will amber it. That might be why you think it has a green cast. I haven't seen this island in a few months, but it probably still looks gray browny, not green. When you choose your base coat, make sure it's in the gray browny tones, not the gray greeny tones. If you look at the wall of paint samples in the store, you'll see what I mean.
