PAINTING A GEL STAIN ON A HUGE BEAUTIFUL DINING ROOM TABLE

PAINTING A GEL STAIN ON A HUGE BEAUTIFUL DINING ROOM TABLE

Thank goodness!!
 I have my house back...
A couple of weeks ago, my client brought this HUGE dining room table for me to paint to look like stained wood.
They wanted me to match it to their new dining room chairs and I got it pretty close.  It was already a very beautiful table, but with this finish, it is very fine and elegant.
With the two leaves, it was 9' 3" long.  I could barely move past it in my dining room.
That's why I'm so happy to have my house back!!
I had to move my dining room furniture into the living room.  My house is small and my studio is full, so my dining room was the ideal place for this huge table.
Then, Patti brought this HUGE mirror for me to paint for her beach house and it fit perfectly on my dining room table~~~in the living room!
She asked me to paint and distress it the salmon color I painted her wonderful pantry doors.  Remember those pantry doors?
This mirror turned out so, so special and will show that to you, soon.
This is the pickled/white washed finish that was on the dining room table BEFORE.
From time to time, I have to move my furniture out of the room to paint larger pieces.
Today, both pieces were picked up within a couple of hours of each other.
When I have to move my furniture out of the way, I really don't mind because when I put everything back in it's place, it's like new again and I really appreciate my home.
Within a couple of hours I had everything vacuumed and back in place.
I love my home!

I've written an eBook about painting with gel stains.

    1. I will post the mirror, soon. I used a gel stain on the table and they're great to work with. They're made to use over a painted surface, unlike a penetrating stain that's used on new wood.

  6. Beautiful! I'm not familiar with gel stain, so I'll look around your blog to see if you've covered that topic before, but I want to know more about it. When I removed the doors to my china cabinet the area where they were attached didn't have the same shiny finish as the rest of the piece. I'd like to touch that up. Thanks for sharing; you did a beautiful job! ~Zuni

    1. Thank you, Jann! I do love my home and feel it is my haven, for sure. Wish I had remembered to take a picture when I went to touch up the table from the move from my house to their's. The couple is young and house contemporary and light floors. It looked very nice! I think she is going to get all different styles of chairs and I think that will look great.

    1. Thank you! You can find gel stains at most paint stores and their main purpose is to be painted over an already painted, sealed or hard surface. A penetrating stain is for penetrating new wood and that is the stain most of us are most familiar with.

  10. Your makeover of the table is amazing Lynda! I didn't know there was gel stain. Maybe you can share a tip or two about how it's different or what you like about using it. :) Inquiring minds want to know! ;)
Thanks for sharing your table, your home as a workshop, and finally your sweet living room all back to normal at Project Inspire{d}!

    1. Thank you, Diane! Most paint stores will have gel stains and they're very easy to use over an already painted or hard surface. If you tried to use a "penetrating" stain over a painted surface, it might take days to dry. A gel stain will (usually) dry overnight. They come, mostly, in dark colors and make your project look like stained wood. Just follow the instructions or ask your paint store.

  12. Yes, I got to see it in their dining room and it looked very, very nice. It was a wonderful contrast to their light floors.
