Ruth is my friend. I was doing some painting for her and she asked if I could do anything with her old metal garden shed out back. I wanted to paint flowers on it and she mentioned hollyhocks because they reminded her of home, back east. So, that's what I painted for her and it really spruced up that little garden shed!
To paint the artwork, I used craft paints like Americana, Ceramcoat, FolkArt and Apple Barrel. They are acrylic and wear very well outdoors.
Looks great - love the hollyhocks. Remind me of home in Virginia.

ReplyDeleteI recently saw a house and it has painted flowers like this around the foundation going up the side into the siding! It's still winter here in Maine and I thought I want some of their dirt? Where did they get that soil at this time of year to grow those flowers. It was just as pretty and real looking as your shed. ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet of you! If you will get some of the craft paints from Michael's, you can do your own artwork. Just paint some large flowers with a stem and leaves. Even if you don't think it looks good, I know it will. From a distance, the colors will show up and look very, very nice.

ReplyDeleteHi! I love this shed, and have a question: How has this held up over time? I am looking to paint something outdoors that will be very exposed to the weather. I was planning to prime with Kilz, Paint with craft paints, and seal with Polycrylic. Have you had much luck with paint like this outdoors?
ReplyDeleteHi, I painted that shed for a client and never went back to see. But, I'm sure it did because it was in the shade. I've painted on garage doors, lots of things outside and the only problem over time is fading, especially if the artwork is in the sun. Sometimes I use exterior paint, but I usually use the better craft paints. They are very durable. If you keep records of the colors you used, you can always go back and touch up. I would check to see if the sealer is ok for outdoors. I don't seal most of the things I paint because I want the dull look. I painted artwork on my garden shed and on my house and that has not faded. My garage door has faded a little because of the sun. Also, reds seem to fade faster than most colors. Hope this helps.
